I'm aware that the Monkees have done and continue to do other things "privately." I was referring to their "public" image which, unlike their "private" one, is open to review. The Jimmy Doohan example is a valid one and proves my point about trying to go beyond your established best and falling back on the familiar when "being original" proved less than successful for him/them(I remember Doohan's "Jason of Star Command" appearances, do you?).
Leonard Nimoy, Ron Howard, Penny Marshall & Betty Thomas are primary examples of celebrities that survived "typecasting syndrome" and became major success stories by going beyond play-it-safe acting roles and actually doing something challenging like direct films outside of their established genres. Mike Nesmith, whom I didn't even mention in my earlier posts but most of you knew I was talking about him by saying the name of the film(sneaky of me, huh?), tried to do that with "Timerider" and failed according to film critics, box-office ticket sales and possibly videotape sales(don't have the figures on hand). While I'll give him an A for effort, I'll have to give him an F for filmmaking. Someone should have told him that old adage "Nobody ever made a good film based on a lousy script." If they did, things might have worked out better for him BIG SCREEN wise. Who knows?

To me, the movie is very underrated. I don't know why it isn't more popular. It's more fun to watch for me than the Matrix is and also has a more thought provoking story. It's also a bit artsy in the way they show the 1930's

I'd recommend a movie, but there's a 99.9% chance you've all seen it already.

12 Monkeys. Enough said.
Didn't care for Thirteenth Floor, and I think The Matrix is my favorite movie at the moment.

^^^Oddly enough, 12 Monkeys is the only Gilliam film I haven't seen yet. I wonder if he made any more after it?

I'd recommend a movie, but there's a 99.9% chance you've all seen it already. Naw, I bet there's two or three people here who haven't seen any of the Benji movies, much less Benji and the Naughty, Nasty Vet's Assistant. Oops, sorry, I gave it away. ;D Sorry, I'm in a wierd mood today. RE: Twelve Monkeys...I rented it on video and had to sit down and watch it again immediately following the first time I saw it...after seeing the ending, I realized that I had missed so much of the movie! For the sheer mind-screw of the whole thing, I'd highly recommend it, Elric.

Thanks for the recommendation for 12 Monkeys, Peter. I'll rent next week and review it if the moderators(forgot where I was at first, these late nights will kill me yet!) are amenable. As for Benji, I saw "For The Love Of..." and I would say that a sugar-sweet formula that managed to generate several sequels without causing diabetes for at least one of its fans ( : could conceivably qualify as SF if not Fantasy.

How about the Benji where he and Porthos get lost in The engine room and have to make their way back to the Bridge to bring a miracle medical cure to Phlox, Ok that was a joke but um do TPTB ever read this stuff?....Star Trek XV Benji's Voyage Home........Be very afraid!!

I'm the one who recommended 12 Monkeys! Don't I get any recognition around here! As someone once said: "I get no respect!" Of course, Peter did put it better than I.
