Captain Jefferys and the USS Archer are ordered to
Bajor in an attempt to once again convince the
Bajorian government to join the Federation. Jefferys
has doubts after Captain Benjamin Sisko appears in a
vision and tells him Bajor is not ready for Federation
membership.
Soon after the starship arrives at Deep Space 9,
Counselor Rhai Tae beings to experience dizziness.
Dr. Johannsen performs a thorough examination and
discovers that she's been infected with rare parasite.
At the same time, Johannsen finds that Tae is
pregnant with Commander Zack's child.
Lt. Commander Stirok, Lieutenant Brandt and Ensign
Kenek agree to go to the parasite's planet of origin,
Tellar. On the way, their runabout is attacked by
three Tellarite battlecruisers and the three officers
are taken captive.
Meanwhile, Agent D'Aaron is contacted by Section 31
and ordered to look into the background of the new
Bajoran Khai. D'Aaron contacts an old friend on Bajor
, a Vedek, who is murdered by a Tellarite before he
can reveal any information. D'Aaron captures the
Tellarite, but dies before he can be interrogated.
Back on the Tellarite ship, Alia is taken to be
interrogated herself. She tries to bribe their
captors, but is unsuccessful. Later, Stirok and
Brandt manage to escape from their cell, only to find
that Alia has already incapacitated the crew. The
three find the bridge and manage to surprise and
destroy the other two Tellarite warships.
Zack, in the meantime, shocked by learning of Rhai's
pregnancy, experiences disturbing visions from the
Prophets. He begins to suspect that a sinister figure
from his past is responsible for Rhai's illness. Zack contacts an old friend, Zelik, who informs him that a rogue Tellarite secret service operative, Seros, planted the virus on board the USS Archer. Seros had apparently gone insane after he had been ousted from his parliament position. He wanted the Federation to blame the Tellarite government for the virus and start a war between the two. Zack tracks Seros to Bajor and kills him. Dayna follows close behind and stumbles upon the murder scene. She then learns that Zack is a former operative and, in a moment of comraderie, offers to tell the authorities that she found the body and that she didn't know who killed him.
On Bajor, Jefferys, Zack and D'Aaron meet with the
Bajoran Khai. The Khai confesses that the parasite
that infects Rhai was actually engineered by the
Bajorans to be used as a biological weapon against the
Cardassians during the occupation. Using this
information, Dr. Johannsen and Doctor Julian Bashir,
find a way to stabilize Rhai's condition, but it's
still up to Stirok, Brandt and Alia to find the other
piece of the puzzle to develop a cure.
Jefferys and Zack later meet with the Bajoran Khai in
private. Jefferys tells her of his vision with Sisko
and his concerns with Bajoran membership into the
Federation. The Khai finally decides that although
Bajor would benefit from the alliance, the will of the
Prophets should take precedence.
Upon arriving at Tellar in the capture pirate ship,
Stirok, Brandt and Alia meet with officials from the
Tellarite government. Johannsen sends them the
schematic of the parasite along with Tae's bioscans.
They work with a top Tellarite genetic engineer to
find a cure. The genetic engineer recognizes the work
of his mentor, a Tellarite scientist that was
kidnapped and presumed dead years ago.
D'Aaron recruits the help of Thram to infiltrate a
renegade Tellarite base hidden in the mountains of
Bajor. They find a biological warfare lab and the
captured Tellarite scientist. Despite Thram's
protests, D'Aaron sets up a chain reaction in the
base's energy reactors, destroying the base and
killing everyone in it. The scientist informs them
that the base was just a small part of a greater
conspiracy.
Meanwhile, Stirok, Brandt and Alia three return to the
Archer with the cure. Johannsen and Bashir irradicate
the parasite without harming Rhai or her unborn child.
Who was behind the virus or the meaning of Sisko's
warning is still unknown.
