Captain Jefferys sat in his captains chair, bored. He supposed he should have been glad for a reprieve from their recent adventures, but he felt himself growing restless.
"Lt. Brandt, any spatial anomalies in the surrouding area?" he asked impatiently.
Lt. Brandt looked warily at the captain. It was the third time in a half hour he had asked that question. "No, sir," he replied, without looking at his screen.
Captain Jeffreys sighed and tapped his fingers on the arm of his chair, hoping against hope that something, anything, would cross their path, even if it was a large flying reptile that spouted blue flame.
Suddenly the communications officer, Lt. Prator, piped up. "Sir, incoming hail," he said.
Jefferys jumped out of his chair and half-ran to the viewscreen. "Onscreen!"
The figure of an injured Orion woman filled the viewscreen. Her brown hair was matted with blood, and a trail trickled down the side of her face.
"Please! I request asylum!" she yelled. "I need transport!"
"Sir," said Lt. Brandt. "The runabout she is piloting is about to explode. The warp core has been breached."
"How many on board?" asked Jefferys.
"Just her," replied Brandt.
Jefferys hit his com badge. "Transporter room, lock onto the life form in the approaching vessel and beam her over," said Jefferys.
[Aye, aye]
Suddenly, an explosion filled the screen and everyone on the bridge turned away to avoid the bright flash. Then the viewscreen went blank.
[Transporter room here. We have the woman.]
"I'm on my way. You have the con," said Jefferys, glancing at Zack as he entered the turbolift. As the turbolift doors closed, Brandt looked at his screen and noticed another ship approaching.
"We have another ship approaching, Orioni," he said.
"Sir, they're hailing us," said Prator.
Just then, Dr. Johanssen stepped onto the bridge, holding a PADD and whistling. He stopped cold in his tracks when he saw the scowl on Zack's face and felt his hard look burn into him. Zack turned from the doctor toward Lt. Prator.
"Onscreen," growled Zack.
As the face of an angry Orioni man popped on the viewscreen, the doctor's PADD clattered to the floor. Zack turned toward the doctor again to throw him another hard look. Only this time Zack noticed the doctor's face had gone white as a sheet.

Johansson, not liking at all what he saw on the viewscreen, walked over to the Captain's Ready room to wait for Commander Zack to follow him. Everybody on the bridge turned heads as he did so. A few moments later, the Commander arrived.
"What on god's name -", Zack started to say before he was interrupted by Johansson. He was trembling.
"Commander, I......", Johansson said as he tried forming his words. What he just saw made him speechless.,"I ... recognize this person....... this Orion..... This ruthless savage murdered my parents!," he continued as his face changed colour to that of being red with fury."

Zack found himself inside the secret laboratory on the surface of Bajor. The Tellarite Seros lay before him bloodied and pale with a dagger in his back and blood oozing from his wound. Seros stared into Zack’s eyes and said:
“You may think that you have defeated me, but you have not! I may die today, but you will live the rest of your life as a ghost, hiding in the shadows, trying to escape your past. You’re a murderer Zack, a ruthless killer. That’s all you’ll ever be! Stop running from it and embrace who you truly are. A MURDERER!”
A MURDERER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zack woke up, sweat running down his forehead. He was in his bed, in quarters, onboard the Archer. He had been dreaming. That same nightmare had been haunting him for the past few weeks. He had kept this to himself, not wanting to worry Rhai in her pregnant state and not wanting his personal life to affect his duties onboard the Archer.
Perhaps Seros was right. When Zack killed him, a small part of him actually enjoyed watching Seros’ life drift away and the blood oozing from his wound. He feltr satisfied knowing that he had killed the man who endangered the life of the woman he loved. Maybe he was just a murderer and that was all he was ever destined to be…
____________________________________________________
Zack sat in the Command chair on the Bridge and anxiously studied his console. His body was rigid with tension, stationary but for his eyes, as he attempted to scrutinise the data before him.
An injured Orion woman had just been beamed over to the Archer from her dying ship, and Doctor Johansson had just appeared on the Bridge, with a smile on his face that irritated Zack (the Bridge was a place of seriousness, not a meeting place for socialising). Initially Zack found the doctor to be an irritating and annoying Betazoid man, who had far too much time on his hands, and who cared too much for socialising and not enough about doing his job. But recently the doctor had shown his ability and experience in the line of duty. Johansson had saved Rhai’s life and the life of Zack and Rhai’s unborn child. If Johansson had been unsuccessful than Zack would have killed him where he stood. But by saving Rhai’s life the doctor had gained Zack’s respect and was a step closer to gaining Zack’s trust. Perhaps Zack would share some of the kanar given to him by Ensign Kenek, with the doctor.
Zack regretted killing Seros, but it was something he had to do. Seros had endangered Rhai’s life, and Zack had to make him pay for that. Zack just hoped that he could now put his darker past behind him and continue being the by the book officer he had been in the past few years. He trusted Officer D’Aron to keep his actions a secret and now felt a sense of respect for her. While he still despised her for being a spy, a kind of camaraderie had now developed between them. While he did not condone her actions, he was now at least able to understand her.
Right now there were more important matters to attend to - the injured Orion qwoman was in Sickbay and now another ship was hailing the Archer. Zack could not understand the character trait in most humans that made them yearn for adventure and trouble. Captain Jefferys had been complaining that the Archer had not been encountering enough adventure in recent times, and his restlessness and boredom had become quite apparent. It was almost as if the captain wanted trouble to come to him. That was one thing Zack could not understand about these humans – it was as if they looked for trouble and then when it found them they longed for quieter times. It was if they could never be pleased one way or the other. They were indeed a paradoxical race.
"Onscreen," growled Zack. As the face of an angry Orioni man popped on the viewscreen, the doctor's PADD clattered to the floor. Zack turned toward the doctor again to throw him another hard look. Only this time Zack noticed the doctor's face had gone white as a sheet.
As Zack followed Doctor Johansson into the Captain’s Ready Room, to deal with the arrival of the Orions and the situation Joahnsson began to tremble, his face going pale.
"Commander, I......", Johansson said as he tried forming his words. What he just saw made him speechless.,"I ... recognize this person....... this Orion..... This ruthless savage murdered my parents!," he continued as his face changed colour to that of being red with fury."
At that point one thought ran through Zack's mind:
It looks like you have found your adventure/trouble Captain Jefferys………

Ensign Alia Kenek watched the Captain, the Doctor, and the XO walk quickly into the Captain's ready room. She exchanged a worried look with Lt. Brandt as the angry Orioni man still glared back on the viewscreen.
"Where has your captain gone?!" he demanded.
Thram stepped forward, his antennae rising as he gave the Orioni man a cold look.
"The Captain will be with you in a moment," Thram said simply.
"This is infamous!" the Orioni said bitterly.
"Captain Jefferys is a busy and important man," Thram said, folding his arms. "He will be with you in a moment."
Kenek smirked slightly. This wasn't the first time she was glad the intimidating Andorian was on their side. The Orioni on the viewscreen still looked angry, but he appeared to be waiting.
A few moments later, Zack, Jefferys, and Johansson emerged from the ready room.
"It's about time, Captain," the Orioni man said impatiently.
"My apologies," Jefferys said, settling down in his chair. "Now, what can we do for you?"
"You transported a wanted criminal on your ship moments ago. Release her to my custody immediately."
"Well, I'm afraid I can't do that at the moment, she is undergoing medical care. She called for our assistance, and since this is Federation space, she is allowed to request asylum."
"That is unacceptable!" the Orioni barked.
"Perhaps if you would be so kind as to tell me about her crimes, maybe we could all understand this situation a little better?" Jefferys said diplomatically.
"You have one hour to transport the woman over to this ship, Captain. One hour." The image of the Orioni left the viewscreen and was replaced by an image of his ship.
"He has cut transmission, Captain," Thram reported.
"Doctor, attend to the woman's injuries," Jefferys said.
"But Captain-" Johansson said.
"I am sympathetic to your situation, Doctor. But right now we need to make sure that our guest's condition is stabilized."
Johansson nodded. "I'll contact you as soon as I have an update."
Ensign Kenek watched the Doctor leave the Bridge, and turned back to her console, formulating potential evasive action procedures if the Orion ship decided to fire.
Things were definitely beginning to get more interesting.

Councelor Tae was on her way to mess hall for a little bite to eat when suddenly her body lunged forward as she sneezed.. She looked around the hallway to see if anyone else had seen her and then continued down towards the mess hall. She got a bowl of soup and sat down to sip it when she sneezed again! She looked down at her soup splashed clothing and laughed.. she realized she was exeriencing sneezing, notorious for Bajoran women during their pregnancy. She giggled as various crew members walked past her wondering what was going on with the councelor. She finished her soup as quickly as she could and headed for the bridge.. she just had to share this with Zack. ------------------------------- Rhai's smile quickly faded as she approached the Bridge. She could hear Captain Jefferies and Zack discussing some thing about the Orions. It sounded to her as if they had taken someone on board and were not sure of their intent, now there was another ship coming to claim this person. She could feel the tension thick in the air and decided to forget her silly Bajoran hiccups and ask if she could help in any way. "Captain,....Zack," She smiled briefly as she greeted the two very different men. "I couldn't help but over hear there is some issue... is there anything I can do to help?" She stood with her hands folded in front of her waist. "Rhai," Captain Jefferies said as he turned to her, "Actually.. if you would go down and talk to the young woman we just took into sickbay you would be doing us.." Just then Tae sneezed very loudly again.. followed by a schoolgirl's giggle. She covered her mouth then looked up at Zack. "Sneezing..." she said. She straightened her composure and spoke to the Captain "Yes, I will do that Captain. Sickbay you said?" "Sickbay Rhai, and could you watch our good doctor as well? If you feel like you need any security down there..alert us and we will send some one down immediately" "Yes Captain!" Rhai said delighted that she was going to be able to actually help the crew on the Archer for the first time.. she headed for sickbay. (modifiied because I made a boo boo- I oringinally said Hiccups..but they were supposed to be sneezes..DOH.. )

Back in Sickbay, Johansson had a dilemna on his hands. He hated the Orions. He desperately wanted to kill all of them. But here, in Sickbay, he had an Orion Woman to treat. Thoughts were going through his mind. This wasn't going to be easy. But he thought to himself how mind probing wouldn't be harmful. So that's what he set himself to do.
"So, I understand you're a wanted criminal.," Johansson asked the Orion Woman.
That direct statement surprised the woman, but chose to lie. That was a bad decision on her part. "No. I'm just a free trader."
Johansson looked at the woman directly in the eyes, "A free trader? I beg to differ. Don't lie. It's likely to put you in trouble and If i know my captain, he's less tolerant to liers."
The woman somewhat looked defeated. "Well.....ok, you win. Yes I am a criminal..... what are you gonna do about it?" That question to Johansson was like a challenge.
"I'll do plenty. You'll see." Johansson wanted her to personally see the destruction of her race just as he saw his parents murdered. It was cruel, he knew that, but it was the only revenge he knew would be acceptable to him. But then he suddenly had a thought.
"Candy, i'm stepping out. Please continue treating her", And with that Johansson went out the Sickbay doors. He headed to the turbolift and to his quarters where, just a few moments ago he remembered about a special disc he was given shortly before his parents were murdered. It was a holodisk. He held it in his hands while a tear streamed down his face. He wasn't used to crying. But now he was.
He took the disk and headed to the nearest Holodeck, inserted the disk and before him, he saw the most beautiful place he'd ever seen. It was a huge estate. He now remembered this from his youth. He was in awe. How could his father afford a thing such as this? Add that to the list of questions he would ask.
He walked up to the stone pattio that lead to the huge double doors. He looked at the knocker, and then he looked at the doorbell and remembered what he had to do. He rang the doorbell twice. That was the sign his parents had given him to let them know it was him. The doors opened silently, but nobody was behind them. How odd. Well, this was a recreation and nothing was perfect and he thought this might be a glitch in the program.
He stepped through the door and his steps echoed throughout the great hall. He looked up and saw what looked like a gigantic chandelier. "Yes, I remember that, "he thought to himself. "Anyone here?", he asked as his voice carried out throughout the hall. He waited and waited and nothing happened. Nobody responded. He decided to take a tour of the estate. But just as he was starting to climb the big set of stairs, a voice called out that startled him.
"James, do you know you should be in school with the other kids?" Johansson turned around very quickly and was surprised at this use of "James". He hadn't heard his name this way since his childhood. "T'Vlut? Don't scare me like that!

Stirok leaned with both hands over the Master Situation Console. Since the Archer went to red alert, Engineering was buzzing with activity. While most Starfleet engineers gave the task to an assistant, Stirok always preferred to monitor the red alert checklist personally.

While a Vulcan was incapable of feeling excitement, he did feel a certain anticipation each time the ship went to high-alert status. Each time was like the first, because each time was different. Combat, a spatial anomaly, a hostile intruder. It was Stirok’s job to ensure each and every one of the ship’s resources was at peak efficiency for any contingency.

Stirok had to admit that the situation had come as quite a relief. Ever since Agent Dayna D’Aaron came onboard, he experienced difficulty controlling his emotions. He went out of his way to avoid her socially. However, moments before the red alert lights flashed they had met in a corridor outside his quarter.
“Agent D’Aaron,” Stirok had nodded coldly. He tried to walk past her, but this time his “evasive maneuvers” weren’t going to work. Dayna grabbed his arm tightly.
Dayna relaxed her grip and sighed. “Look, it’s been weeks and we haven’t talked. Don’t you think this is getting a little ridiculous?”
“I am sorry, Agent D’Aaron. I do not…” That’s when the klaxons sounded. The old Earth expression came to Stirok’s mind: “Saved by the bell.” Yet, despite his distressing feelings toward her, at the same time he felt as if a part of him had returned.

"Yes, it is me, James", T'Vlut responded. He was a Vulcan Butler who was hired to keep the estate in order. "I am sorry I startled you."
"For god sakes, T'Vlut, I'm no child anymore. I serve on a Federation Starship. I take care of the wounded. I took the chance that I wouldn't have been able to do with Mother and Father....", Johansson said.
"Mother and Father? They are right here in this Estate."
"No, I'm afraid you don't understand, T'Vlut. This is a recreation and Mother and Father have been dead for 20 years."
There was silence in the hall for a number of minutes before either of them spoke again.
"I am sorry about your misfortune, James.... Perhaps I can help."
"Yes, tell me.... how did Father have the money for this Estate?"
"That is something I cannot reveal, James."
"Perhaps later then.... Tell me, did Father have any dealings with the Orion before he was murdered?"
"I am not sure, James. Why?"
"I just wondered. It might have some clue to my parent's deaths."
"Shall I make an Inquiry?"
"You're a Hologram, T'Vlut. Holograms cannot and do not make inquiries, but thanks for the thought. I'll be going now, but you can bet your hanky that i'll be back."
"Thank you, T'Vlut." Johansson smiled for the first time in 10 minutes. He ended the program as he headed out the door, and to his surprise, a Red Alert was sounding throughout the ship. Crewmen were making their busy ways throughout the corridors and Johansson almost tripped on one. "Sorry", Johansson muttered. He entered the turbolift and exited it a few moments later to enter Sickbay where he was oblivious to the goings on.
"Is everything ok?"
"Everything's fine", Candy replied," but you look like you've seen a ghost." He was getting white again. Perhaps it was the Orion woman he came into view. He couldn't work with Orion without becoming white like a sheet. He stumbled as the ship rocked under Orion fire as he tried to make his way to his office. He tapped his commbadge. "Johansson to Rhai".
"Rhai Here, what is it Doc?"
"I'll be needing an appointment with you..... "

Time was running out for the crew of the Archer. Forty minutes had elapsed since the Captain of the Orion ship contacted the Archer and demanded they hand over the Orion woman. The ship had been placed on red alert and crewmen were scurrying all over the ship, manning their stations, ensuring that the ship was prepared for battle, if such circumstances should arise.
Commander Zack walked alongside Captain Jefferys, down the corridor leading to Sickbay. Councillor Rhai had spoken with the Orion woman to find out why she had requested asylum on the Archer and why she was being pursued.
Zack watched the Captain’s face as they neared Sickbay. He seemed to be in a deep state of concentration, attempting to calculate all the possibilities of the current predicament. Once again, Zack found himself dumbfounded. What was it with these humans? A few hours ago the captain was dying of boredom and now he seemed to be wishing for quieter times. Could these humans never be happy?
Jefferys turned to face Zack and said:
“We can’t just hand over the woman to the Orions onboard that ship. She has requested asylum and as a Federation starship we have no other choice but to grant it to her.”
“I understand that Captain, but we cannot endanger the lives of the crew of the Archer. Rhai is presently speaking to the Orion woman; perhaps her findings will enable us to have a better grasp on the current situation. Time, however, is not on our side. We only have thirty minutes left before our hour is up. I suggest that once we speak to Rhai and the Orion woman, we call a meeting of the senior officers and attempted to use our collective energies to ameliorate the present situation.”
At that point the two very different men entered the Sickbay. Rhai and the Doctor stood beside the Orion woman, as Nurse Marcella treated the Orion.
“Captain, Commander…I am sorry, but I was unable to treat this woman. I just can’t do it. Nurse Marcella had treated her wounds.” Johansson said, his face pale and relfecting his state of panic.
Zack scowled. While he had gained a new respect for the doctor after he saved Rhai’s life, the current situation made Zack very angry. As a Doctor, Johansson swore an oath to treat all patients, of all walks of life. That was his job. If he could not adequately perform his duties, than he may as well leave the Archer. But at the same time, Zack could almost empathise with the Doctor. But only almost.
Before Zack could voice his protests, Rhai stepped forward, in an attempt to diffuse the situation. It was as if she could read Zack’s mind and knew what he was going to say before he did. They truly were on the same wavelength.
“What the Doctor means to say is that he has been unable to treat the Orion woman for personal and physical reasons– which is quite understandable as he believes he is not in the right state of mind to properly treat a patient. While he is a Doctor and has sworn an oath to treat patients of every kind, he hasn’t been able to face his own personal demons since everything has been happening so quickly. I agree that it is preferable for Nurse Marcella to treat her since the Doctor is not in the best physical condition. We wouldn’t want the doctor to treat a patient if he himself was suffering from a physical condition. In his panicked state he is more prone to make a mistake.”

She said all the right things, Zack thought to himself. That was why he loved her so much. She was such a gentle woman, but she could be strong if she needed to be. Her argument was indeed valid. The Doctor could not treat a patient if he needed treatment himself.
Jefferys replied:
“While I can empathise with you Doctor, you have to understand that you are a very valuable member of this ship. We will speak about this matter at a later time. Right now we need to deal with those Orions out there…”
All of a sudden the Orion woman rose out of her bed:
“Asylum, asylum, I request asylum. Please Captain. You cannot turn your back on me. You have to help me. If you hand me over to those pirates than you are no worse than them. I told your councillor everything. How they’ve been chasing me. Trying to kill me”
Rhai stepped forward and said:
“Sasharia, the Orion female, is being hunted down by a growing rebel faction of Orion pirates. She has told me that a group of leading Orions from the Syndicate have broken away from the others and through the use of a controlled disease, they have been using the other Orions as slaves. The reason for this was because Saharia's family and other Orions did not pay their "fares" to their superiors. As a result of this they are now being punished.”
“Yes…they have been using us as their slaves, making us follow their orders - making us kill, steal. If we do not do as they demand, than they do not give us the antidote. Please you must help me. My whole life I have been paying for things my father did. I have managed to escape without being injected with the virus. But others have not been as lucky. You must help us.”
Just then Thram contacted the captain from the Bridge: “Sir three heavily armed Orion warships are approaching. We are being hailed again. It appears our time has run out………”

"On my way," replied Jefferys. He looked at Zack and sighed heavily. Then they both turned and exited sick bay. Doctor Johanssen looked after them as they walked away, then looked back at Sasharia.
"I'll be back," he said. Rhai watched as he left sick bay, a puzzled look on her face. Things were certainly becoming interesting around here.
************************
Dayna stood alone, looking at the planets revolving on their axis on the screen in the astrometrics lab. She had found solitude, both in the lab and within astrometrics itself. Its very nature contained order, an order that Dayna had found lacking in her own life. And her recent encounter with Stirok in the hall had only served to upset her even more. She knew he had been avoiding her, and she wondered whether he even thought about her at all.
She had been grateful to Lt. Brandt for affording her the opportunity to explore the physical sciences once more. Her mind had not been focused at the Academy; she would often sit in class and replay in her mind the daring guerilla and S&R missions she had taken part in on Bajor.
Lt. Brandt had been a patient teacher, having gone over the basics with Dayna at least a dozen times, until something had finally clicked within Dayna's mind. Things then began falling into place. When she had finally mastered the basics, Lt. Brandt had seemed relieved that he could finally move onto something else. Dayna had felt relief, as well. She was beginning to think she would never understand it.
As she concentrated on the task of tracking Jupiter's moons, Doctor Johanssen came bounding in the lab, obviously agitated. Dayna was surprised to see the doctor, since their paths rarely crossed. He walked right up to her.
"Do you do freelance work?" he asked.
"Excuse me?" asked Dayna.
The doctor looked around furtively. Then he lowered his voice. "You know, wet ops."
Dayna's eyebrows rose. "I don't know what you're talking about," said Dayna, turning back to the screen. Of course she was lying.
"Don't give me that. You know they're here," said the doctor.
"Who?"
"The Orions, for heavens sake. Haven't you heard the klaxons?"
"I heard them," said Dayna. "But I've learned to just stay out of everyone's way during a red alert. Believe me, I've had enough excitement to last me for the rest of the year."
"The Orion who killed my parents is on board a ship, just off our bow! Surely you know my...classified biography," replied the doctor.
Dayna sighed. "Look, doc, I have enough classified information rattling around inside my head to preclude me from seeking out information I don't really need to know about." She had lied again. She had reviewed everyone's history before she came on board the Archer. But SI's bios were mere words on paper, they had no life. She wanted the doctor to relate his story in his own words.
He quickly rattled off the story of his early childhood while Dayna manipulated Jupiter's other moons. As he came to the part when his parents were killed, he slowed. The doctor's eyes began welling with tears, and he lifted up his arms, as if to shield himself from the horrific sight.
When he finished, he turned to Dayna and said coldly, "I want you to help me kill them."
Dayna furrowed her brow in response. Then she shook her head. "Doc, I understand. And believe me, if I were in your shoes I'd do the same thing. But I can't help you kill someone out of revenge."
"What?" he said, incredulous. Then he relented. "I have 10,000 bars of pressed latinum..."
"It's not the money," said Dayna.
"Then what?" asked the doctor impatiently.
"Killing him won't rid you of your personal demons," replied Dayna. "I should know."
"I'm not worried about personal demons. I want him dead!"
Dayna turned toward the screen again. "Good luck," she said.
"Is that it? No help, not even some advice?"
"Advice? Alright, the advice is free," said Dayna. "Forget about killing him."
"You make me sick!" said the doctor. Then he turned and stormed out the door.
Dayna sighed. How many more people would she alienate? She had to admit that she didn't know much about the Orions. Perhpas it was time to acquaint herself with them.

Johansson muttered under his breath as he made his trek back to Sickbay. "That woman! She doesn't even know what's good for her!" As he strode into sickbay, Nurse Marcella commented on his appearance.
"Doc, you don't look so good. Perhaps you need some rest."
"Need some rest?," Johansson replied, "You've heard the Captain. He has explicitly told me how important I am to this vessel. I ain't stopping now, Lady! Now get out of my way......."
Candy Marcella was getting very concerned about Johansson's state of mind. He was getting very rude. She decided to monitor Johansson from now on.
He strode to his office, pulled out a bottle of old whisky from a cupboard that he kept off-limits for special occasions. He felt that this warranted enough of an occasion. He twisted the cap off the bottle and took a giant swig. Candy, out of her eye saw what Johansson was doing and decided to contact the Captain.
"Nurse Marcella to Captain," she said out of urgency, "I believe there is a problem with the Doctor. He is behaving highly erraticly."
"On my way, "Jefferys responded, "See to it that the Doctor doesn't wander out of Sickbay."
"Yes Sir", replied the nurse, "Mercella out." Oh Boy, the Doctor is going to get it now. Suddenly, Johansson walked out of his office while muttering something. It grew louder and louder until Candy had to resort to using some hypo on him.

Thram contacted the captain from the Bridge: “Sir, three heavily armed Orion warships are approaching. We are being hailed again. It appears our time has run out………”
Captain Jefferys tapped his combadge. "I'm on my way. Commander," he nodded to Zack.
"Captain...," Sasharia said as the men began to walk toward the sickbay doors. "What do you intend to do?"
Jefferys straightened a little. "You have requested asylum. I am obliged to grant it."
"Thank you, Captain," Sasharia said gratefully.
A few moments later, Jefferys and Zack arrived on the bridge to find Thram having a staredown with an Orion on the viewscreen.
"It is about time, Captain!" The Orion said angrily. "Now, give us the woman, and we can all go about our day."
"I'm afraid I can't do that," Jefferys said, settling into his chair. "She has requested asylum, and I have granted it."
"This is infamous!" growled the Orion. "You must realize you are outnumbered, Captain."
"I also realize that this is Federation space," Jefferys said, leaning forward. "And if you cause an incident, the Federation will consider it an act of war, and Orion free trade throughout Federation territories will cease."
The Orion on the screen stiffened. "Captain," he said a bit more diplomatically, "I'm sure both of us want to avoid turning this into an 'incident'. Perhaps we could discuss this like civilized men, I could beam aboard your vessel. I think that once you have a chance to hear of this woman's crimes, you will agree on the import of returning her to us."
"Perhaps," Jefferys said. "I will make arrangements with my transporter chief to beam you aboard."
"I look forward to it," the Orion said with a sleazy smile on his face.

Stirok was ordered to meet the captain and Commander Zack in Transporter Room 1. It was doubtful that the captain needed Stirok's expertise to handle the transporter controls. Any first year cadet could handle a transporter console. Stirok found it more likely that the captain was interested in Stirok’s logical viewpoint. This was certainly a difficult and dangerous situation and Jefferies needed all the help he could get.
Zack and Jefferies were already in the transporter room when Stirok arrived.
“We’re waiting on the signal from the lead Orion vessel,” said Jefferies quickly. “What is your tactical analysis of their ships? Could we take them if things go sour?”
Another officer might have been taken aback from the captain’s lack of greeting and frank question. Stirok, however, didn’t skip a beat. “I’ve run a complete scan. They are using retired Starfleet Miranda-class light cruisers. A number of these ships were disarmed and sold to the private sector. The Orions have obviously re-armed them with black-market phaser and torpedo launchers. Although our weapon and shield systems are more advance, their number gives them a significant tactical advantage.”
Jefferies turned to Zack. “Any other Federation starships in the area?”
“Negative, sir,” replied Zack. “We’re on our own for this one.”
The crewman at the transporter controls interrupted. “Sir, the Orion Syndicate vessel Under New Ownership is signaling. They say they’re ready to come aboard.”
“Very well. Energize.”
“Aye, sir,” said the crewman. “Lowering shields for transport.”

“Computer, where is Dr. Johanssen?” asked Dayna.
“Dr. Johanssen is in corridor 3,” replied the Computer.
“Did he just leave the holodeck?”
“Affirmative” replied the Computer.
Dayna left Astrometrics and headed for holodeck 2. When she arrived, the door slid open to reveal an empty room covered in grid lines.
Dayna wondered what program the doctor had just run.
“Computer,” said Dayna, hoping against hope that the program did not have a security lock. “Run the program that Dr. Johanssen just did.”
Suddenly, the empty room was transformed into lush rolling hills that crested unto a large mansion. Manicured flower beds accented the emerald grass, and large maple trees lined the property borders. Dayna shrugged and trudged up the hill to the house. When she arrived, she rang the door bell twice. A tall, slightly heavy Vulcan butler answered the door and raised one eyebrow at the sight of her.
“May I help you?” he asked. Dayna pushed past the butler and whistled at the sight of the interior of the mansion.
“Nice place,” said Dayna, looking around at the Ming Dynasty vases and Matisse paintings. Someone’s got money.
“So who lives here, Alfred?” said Dayna.
The butler raised his eyebrow again. “My name is T'Vlut, and Mr. and Mrs. Johanssen live here.”
“So, the doc’s parents live here. How ‘Je me souviens,’” said Dayna, fingering a Fabergé egg.
“Please put that down,” said T'Vlut in a chastising voice.
“You’ve lived among humans too long,” said Dayna. “You’re starting to sound like them.” She let the egg drop to the floor where it broke into hundreds of tiny pieces.
“Oops,” said Dayna, staring directly at T'Vlut. She knew if she was going to elicit any sort of information out of T'Vlut, she would have to unnerve him. And unnerving a Vulcan was no easy task.
Dayna sat on the plush couch and put her feet up on the marble table. She saw T'Vlut stiffen slightly out the corner of her eye.
“Computer, dress T'Vlut in a chain mail tunic,” said Dayna. The Computer complied and T'Vlut looked down to see his chest showing through the holes in the metal shirt. Dayna lay back on the couch and regarded him with a lecherous gaze.
“Mmm, not bad, T'Vlut, not bad,” she said. She saw a glint behind those eyes…a glint of anger. Yes, T'Vlut, too much time among humans.
“So tell me the habits of Mr. Johanssen,” said Dayna. “Whom does he see, when, where?”
“I cannot divulge that information,” said T'Vlut stiffly.
“Soreck, I’m trying to save little Master Johanssen from committing murder. Work with me here.”
“Murder?” asked T'Vlut.
“Yes,” replied Dayna, jumping up. “Murder. You see he wants to kill the Orion who killed his parents. And unless I find the enemy of his enemy and somehow get them to perform the deed...” she let that sentence linger between them. She stood before Soreck and gazed into his eyes. Nothing.
“Computer, disrobe T'Vlut completely.”
The computer complied and T'Vlut stood naked before her. Dayna saw that glint of anger again; humiliation seemed to be his weak spot.
“I’m just asking for information, T'Vlut, not the family silver.”
T'Vlut merely stood there, the angry glint wavering behind his naked stare.
