Certainly a terrible result, but perhaps not entirely unpredictable.
I am all for proportional representation based electoral systems , however, when there are far too many major parties it really goes to pot...
However, if you stop and think a little, try and figure out how many votes the BNP would gain here if the voting system were 'fair'. They gained one seat [Oldham, I believe in the last elections] and always have a representative in many constituencies. And, unfortunately, they always get votes. If every vote for them was tallied, as in France, then the number would certainly be quite high...
Not as high as the result in France, admittedly, but still at levels that shouldn't be allowed.
As it is, the left are now supporting Jacques Chirac and other smaller parties, and so La Pen shouldn't gain much support from now on in...
Not a nice man.

When I saw the results, I had two thoughts... "You mean Le Pen is still alive? I thought that freak died years ago." and "How long has French socialized medicine been lobotomizing every baby at birth? I know the French can be stupid, but really!"
The U.S. media is reporting this vote more as an aberration, and expects Chirac to win handily.

Certainly, all this media fuss should help encourage a better turn out for the next round, even though the better opponents to Chirac have been ousted already. By voter apathy...
A lesson to democracys everywhere.....
