Those despicable inventions... I installed Audiogalaxy a bit too carelessly, and have then spent considerable chunk of the day trying to remove the uninvented guests from my 'puter that came in piggybacking, BonziBuddy and Gator. BB seems to be more annoying than harmful but Gator includes known spyware Cydoor, and it's turned out to be tough to uproot: it took three outings from Ad-aware to get rid off all the suspicious files, and even after Ad-aware gives negative scan result, I'm still getting a missing DLL file -error message at startup that I can only prevent from appearing but cannot track what's prompting it. Grrr. Moral of the story: pay close attention on what you're installing, and if you're not already using Ad-aware or other spyware detecting program, I highly recommend getting one. You may be surprised by the things lurking in your computer that you've been blissfully unaware of...

Hmm. I never really download software from the Internet. I have no need to, so this doesn't really affect me... However, to throw the cat amongst the pigeons... Think of my sig... Who makes sure that there is no spyware in the spychecker programs? Edit : I realised that I have not had the phrase "who moderates the moderators" in my signature for quite some time... *Silly ST*

Who makes sure that there is no spyware in the spychecker programs? None, I guess... But Ad-aware, for example, is the most popular of them and I trust that if there were something riding on it, some hacker out there would have found that out. Searching Google groups brings nothing suspicious up, and that's where such a weblore ends up sooner rather than later. Also, I didn't dowload mine from web, I got it from a CD-ROM accompanying a respectable computer magazine.

I finally got mine scrubbed clean --I hope! You can get rid of the missing file -message by eliminating the cause from Startup [Start > Run > msconfig > Startup]. Unchecking the unwanted item on the list [If the missing DLL file name doesn't give you enough hint to indentify the right item, go to www.dll-files.com and you should find the name of the item and as well as some more useful info about the file in question.] will disable the error message, but what is prompting the error message in the first place still remains. No worries: in Startup, you can also see the path leading where the problematic DLL file used be. It probably points to a folder under Program Files. Go to Program Files and delete that folder. Done. I hope that makes some sense and will be at least some help for you..

^I just figured that out and came online to share it with everyone. LOL. I also found a .dll file in my shared folder that was somehow responsible for "replicating" the spyware, I swear this stuff is like a virus. It seems that every time I started up my computer some of the registries for the spyware that I had just deleted were back. But now I've killed it, I hope it stays dead.
