Guys there's this new PBEM that I really think you should check out if ur interested in PBEms. It's called Star Trek Excalibur. The Basic story is that it is the dawn of the 25th century and an era of peace has fallen upon the Galaxy. The Federation's latest ship to be build in association with the Romulan Star Empire and Klingon Empire is lauched. It's first mission is to solve the riddle of why starship's from the UFP, RSE, KE have been disappering in a remote sector of space for the last century. However it two finds its self lost in the M33 Galaxy which is better known as the Triangulum Galaxy as there is no way home. The crew set about building a new Federation. With hostile alien's at every turn. The site is still being developed but give it a go still. With the help of loyal ST fans it could become a great success. www.soft.net.uk/voyager1/Excalibur/

Please enlighten an ignorant semi-gamer. What's a PBEM?

Sure. Basically PBEM stands for Play By EMail. You take up a position on a starship and you post regularly the events that occur on the ship from your characters perspective. The captain and the X0, with input from the crew, create the framework for each episode, and then each character has to respond to the situation.
Here's an example. Just say I posted in an email that the Romulans were going to take over the ship and then left it as "to be continued". Then you would continue the plot from the perspective of your character. You would also use some posts to develop the personality and backgorund of your character.
You should check out the site. It's only in the development stages but its has a lot of potential.

I'm not, but I wish I had the time to get involved with something like that. It sounds really cool.

Ok we know that Star3 isn't a member of a PBEM, but what about everyone else. You should realy check them out guys. They r a great way to be a character in Trek, and the closest you can get to actually livin in the 24 century.

I was really into RPG's in high school and college, and I played in a chat-based sim for a little while two years ago, but because of the time zone I live in, it became very difficult to participate. I've toyed with the idea of doing a PbEM -- most of what I do involves writing, and I feel like I'm pretty good at it -- but I'm concerned that I don't have the time to really do it well in a game. That being said, I'll check out the Excalibur site, Alex, and post my thoughts back here when I'm done.

Okay, I've checked it out...here's my thoughts.
Overall, the site is very nice, well put-together. I like the concept and back-story, and I think it's got a lot of potential for future growth.
My only qualm or quibble is the sketches of the ship...I'm pretty picky about this kind of thing though. As a "technobabbly" kind of fan, I like to see ship designs and Treknology that's either very similar to what we've seen, or that is a logical outgrowth of something from the screen. This is the difficulty of doing a sim in the future of the canon timeline...and it's hard to get around.
Okay...my critique is really pretty minor really...I do like the site, and it looks like a good sim. Thanks for pointing it out!

Great to find out about your opinion concerning the Excalibur PBEM Pete. I, too, think that the PBEM has great potential for future growth and is quite interesting. It seems that things have been a little slow in terms of members, but that should pick up eventually. I'm the type of person who enjoys a good story and particularly originality, so i found this sim especially interesting. I'm sure that even if you don't participate as much as you'd like to, you would still play an important role. Just out of curiosity, what type of work do you do, or have you done, that invloves writing?
Even though the ship design does not really concern me, i can see your point of view, and I understand your criticism. I've decided that quite soon I will create a new thread devoted to Star Trek Sims, in which i will rate sims and analyse their strengths and weaknesses.
I just got back from a camping trip, so i have a lot of unpacking and bill checking to do, but once im done, im going to work on the thread.

To answer your question, I'm the pastor of a small church in Portugal that serves (mostly) Americans assigned to the U.S. Air Force base here. I also work on a Christian education curriculum design and review team for a publishing house in the U.S. Plus I'm doing graduate work right now toward a Th.D. in applied theology, living on the fringes of the "publish or perish" world of academia. I'd be very interested in a thread that rates sims. I always enjoy checking out their web pages just to see other fans' takes on the Trek universe. To me it's more fun than reading fan-fic. I have about twenty bookmarked, so if you need suggestions on which to review, I'd be happy to provide a few. IM me if you want to chat about it!
