This for those of you who read the books AND have seen the movie. Did it remain true to vision you saw in your heads? I read the Hobbit at a young age, and the ring series in High school. The mental Image I painted I thought was very graphic and complete, I just saw the movie a few days ago and at last a movie that pays real attention to the books!!!! I think Tolkein would be impressed, to say the least, and if you have not read the books, PLEASE make some time this year do yourself a favor and at least read the Hobbit, and maybe Fellowship of the rings, Use your best judgement if you want to read or see Two Towers first. On a side note if you see Nolo's Dont'T kill me thread in 10 forward, you will see in one of my post that I have the nickname Legolam. This is from a book the Harvard Lamthingy did years ago called "Bored of the rings". I am tall, fair skined, thin, and If I push my hair back behind my ears I look like what some people thought Legolis would look like. Well In the movie hes a lot better looking than me so I became the second best, Legolam from the harvard lamthingy book also staring Frito(frido) And a few other funny ones find it if you can!!!

It's been awhile since I've read the books as well! I thoroughly loved The Hobbit, vaguely remember Fellowship and was only halfway through Two Towers before I dropped out of college.
Loved what they did with the film, though. The scene where Gandalf(Goodgulf in Bored of the Rings I believe) saved Bilbo from sharing the same fate as Gollum and the one where Bilbo was having a temporary relapse after seeing The Ring in Frodo's possession was handled as only a fan of the original story could possibly have visualized it! Keeping Gollum in the shadows in this film adds a nice touch for those who haven't read the book. It will bring the point home when they see the second film, when we'll "meet" this tragic creature, and come to the same conclusion that the original fans already suspected when they read the original story. I'm delighted to see that the brilliant director of this film is a Tolkien fan like us!
I can't wait for the other two films if this is any indication of what's to come! Best of all, they'll both appear around my 43rd and 44th birthday!!! They're the best presents I'll ever expect to receive! ;D

Hm! I was a little disappointed here! I certainly did not visualise Bilbo like that when I listened to the book. I was actually a little disappointed with the beginning of the movie Bilbo’s disappearance and Frodo leaving his home was a part of the first book I really enjoyed.

I read The Hobbit and LOTR in middle school, but the details are still reasonably clear in my mind. The movie was obviously a bit "prettier" than my vision of Middle-Earth (Moria was far less well-lit, for instance), but I still loved it.

I saw it about four months ago in a bookstore and wanted to get it again, At the time she(Qab) said no to a little book for $6.50. My memory of Bored of the Rings is even more fuzzy, but I strongly remember Goodgulf going up against The Ballhog! Hilarious doesn't begin to describe it!

Many of you might take me for a fool, and untwited heart, but more insightfully, they think i'm queer of unfolk, Many out there share the same experiance. If you go to www.lordoftherings.co.uk/ you will find me. My name is Lemboreon, and i am an elven misstress. But only go there if you are looking for adventure. But i hold nothing agaings Star Trek or Star Wars. [/glow]

Okay, here it comes.
Wow. what superb effects. (even if I did get a little motion sick at one point.)
Yes, it is pretty true to the books. So 'Hobbit' got precis-ed as 'the Prologue' rather than a whole movie, which is a shame, but at least they kept it brisk. A knowledge of the books is handy just for the races and locations but not essential I think.
When I first read Fellowship, I bawled my eyes out at the description of the death of Boromir and his 'viking' funeral at the falls. And I sniffed rather a lot again in the cinema. So very well done.

^^^Bits of The Simarillion were Prologued as well, my dear. Elrond and Isiadore's missed opportunity to destroy the Ring was prefaced there along with the story of Elrond's brother, who chose to live the life of a human. Half-elves can choose to follow one path or the other upon adulthood. Elrond chose the other.

I try to forget about the Silmarillion - because I just couldn't get into it. I know dear JRR was trying to create a mythology for the British Isles, and that Hobbits are the prewar country yeoman of Ye Olde England, but the tome was just too much for me. I skimmed a bit and gave up.
Good job I'm not an English 'major'... I'd be so embarassed by that admission.

^^^Actually, I believe it was Tolkien's son trying to get rich by selling his dad's old notebooks repackaged as one Rings prequel novel. I prefer what Herbert's son did with his dads leavings. At least he got a talented writer to repackage them as three coherent novels.
