Star Trek, or as is called now by most, TOS, is usually criticized and disliked by many of the younger people these days who comprise the majority of the Trek fans. Yes, it had poor graphics, horrible acting most of the time, and a fat captain, but they storylines were good and it wasn't too bad for its era. I know there are quite a few younger fellows posting on this board, and I think some older ones too. What do ye all think of TOS? Do tell also whether or not ye're... of an older or younger generation...

I'm in my teens, and the only problem I have with TOS is that I haven't gotten to see enough of it! Special effects don't matter all that much to me, Shatner doesn't seem to be in terrible shape, and as overwrought as the acting can get, Trek (and arguably the rest of television) has yet to create a trio with the same chemistry as Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.

Hmm. Well, I'm only 16, and I think that TOS is a fantastic series. Perhaps it is not for those 'light fans', who are only interested in graphics, and not in story... Indeed, I know some of these fans, and they are the same age as me...
TOS is great... Simple as that...

I love TOS. It used to be my favorite series. Some of the episodes are still just great, great, great!

Okay, I'll admit it - I'm 18 and I don't really like TOS. I've enjoyed episodes like Mirror, Mirror and Balance of Terror - but I don't really find the vast majority of TOS episodes particularly entertaining. Rather, they make me cringe when I hear those terms that sound really funny from a modern Trek perspective (can't think of any right now, but you know what I mean). It also doesn't help that the Sci-Fi Channel seems to be showing The Devil in the Dark every freakin' time I turn it on...I must have seen that episode 90 million times by now.

I'm 32, so I don't know if I qualify as young or old. In the mid 70's was when I first started to see TOS. It was in syndication. Of course, back then the only channels on TV were ABC,NBC,CBS and PBS(in my area) After the stations had shown their mandated shows, they were free to choose what they wanted. This meant that they needed syndicated shows/re-runs.
There were not a lot out there(Andy Griffith,Gilligan's Island etc.) The local stations had time slots in late evening and afternoon to fill. Luckily for me, some chose to fill their time with TOS. I never really knew when they would be on or what station. They just popped up and I watched. By that method I was able to see most all of them and some many, many times.
Suddenly, along comes Star Wars in 77' and the world changes. Sci-Fi is cool! By then we had a few more channels and they started showing TOS fairly regularly. The ST:TMP comes out. Whoops! That did not do a lot to help the series in my area. I went to see the movie(3X), but I am sorry to say that to a youngster it paled in comparison to Star Wars.
Still, I watched TOS whenever it popped up. Flash forward to 1991. I decide it is time to re-new my relationship with TOS. I head to the local video store and rent every episode they have in stock(which was almost all). By now I am a huge fan of TNG and want to look at the old series again. I loved it then as much as when I was young.
To me it was never about the graphics, it was the story. It was the interplay between the BIG 3 that I loved. The well written stories that used sci-fi as a way to address issues that had been prevalent back in the 60's and were still relavent today.
TOS started it all, sure there were some bad episodes. They always seem to be the ones that get shown a lot today(weird). But the first two seasons were rock solid(IMO).
I know that by today's standards it is very easy to criticize the special effects and look of TOS. Really, this is unfair. TOS tried very hard, they were cutting edge for the time, it was the most expensive show put on TV. Each episode had a budget of around $187,000. That was big money back then. Remember that this is 187k in a time where the average income is about 10k, a car about 5k and a house 25-30k.
They worked their butts off in TOS. They made the most of what they had, they had to invent just about everything from scratch. They did all of this while constantly fighting Desilu, NBC and critics. The fact that they ever got the show to air is a miracle. Keeping it on for 3 years another miracle. Making it as good as it was, miracle #3.
The world is different now, shows are flashy with little substance. Most shows are nothing more than 23 minute commercials. Yet, TOS still stands up well. On a limited budget, under constant pressure, they made a show that endures till today, that has spawned 4 spinoffs, 10 movies and a billion conventions. I would say they did pretty good.

I am a big TOS-fan. Most of the time. There are episodes I would really like to see burn for an eternity in the place Tv-series go to die. But the characters and the "feel" of the original series is just fabulous.
The movies rieked the first time I saw them. But I am really intressted in seeing them again now. I am buying them soon. The biggest issue I had was that they had gotten so OLD! I saw the movies first, before I saw TOS, and I did not warm up to TOS before I had gotten really into trek with TNG.
Now I love all Trek. Age... 26.... not quite old, not really young.

I'm definitely what you would call a "new" Trekkie. That being said, I do like TOS a lot. It's not my favorite series of the bunch, and I definitely know a lot more about say, DS9 or TNG than TOS, but I still really like it. And Star Trek VI still stands as my favorite Trek film. My grandmother is a huge TOS fan (back in the 70's she used to follow Nimoy around the college lecture circuit), and she did try to get me to watch it a few times, but that was before I was "converted" and I was only about 10 years old, and couldn't see past the goofy 60's look. I really couldn't comprehend why the women wore those minidresses if they were in the military. When I was in 8th grade, and staying after school to work on the school newpaper, the teacher put on TNG, and I fell in love with the show so much that I couldn't pay any attention to the work on the newpaper. I immersed myself into all things Trek pretty hard, and after watching numerous TNG episodes, I could look back at TOS and appreciate it for what it was, looking past the minidresses and goofy special effects, and I really came to enjoy the show a great deal. And my grandma was thrilled we could watch it together.

OhOhOh yes! But my favorite hate-object is "The Squire of Gothos" from season 1.
If I have to see that once again I tell you I do not know what might happen....

Isn't it amazing how the episodes that we dislike are always the ones they seem to show. I liked that episode the first 3 times I saw it, however, after time number 50,026 (exaggerates for dramatic effect) I have grown a bit weary of it.

It is amazing how many times I have seen that episode considering they only showed trek once a week. It is like they recycled that one because the head of the tvstation took the next episodes home and forgot to bring them back

I'm one of the old guy Trekkers (since Sept. 66) and what surprises me most is how well some of it holds up. When you consider the technology available to them and the fact that they were working with little time and no money, many of the shows still manage to have an impact. It may be the rosy glow of nostalgia, but it also seems that they were just not as bland as some of the modern fare (which I watch and for the most part enjoy). Also, I find the music (an aspect of TOS not often cited) to be much more exciting and contribute more tellingly than the sonic wallpaper used on most of the newer shows. Although I can't really deal with TOS all that often ( you think you've seen them too many times, imagine me), it will always hold a special appeal.
