...I watched a TOS episode... It's been scarce on the ground this year, but I managed to catch "The Ultimate Computer" this afternoon. And, just to reassure you all, TOS is still good. I've seen it before, but it's a good episode... Nicely done. And hell, that was an impressive red shirt death...

Glad you enjoyed it.
Somehow that story of computers replacing people gets more appropriate with time. And please note, no one ever even considered that the computer might have become 'alive' at any point! Hooray!

Somehow that story of computers replacing people gets more appropriate with time. Is that necessarily a bad thing, though... From where I see it, it can go one of three ways. - It is a bad thing à la Matrix... AI goes horribly wrong, and we get ourselves into all sorts of problems.
- It is a good thing à la The Culture Minds. [Iain M. Banks reference]. Admittedly this is set far into the future, but it is practically a utopia. The minds and computers are far cleverer than people, and do the vast majority of jobs. But not at the peoples' expense - in fact to their vast benefit...
- We assume a state of coexistence and little changes.
Which is the most likely? The most desired?

Which is the most likely? The most desired? The mostly likely is not often the most desired.

Indeed, that's why I asked both questions... Perhaps we can shape this though, so that what we create doesn't necessarily run away with us...

Just bear in mind that you are talking with the woman who got drafted into the team to test the software that will do the jobs of her and 5 collegues when it rolls out into the business in a month or so's time........
Whereupon she will have very few career choices left, and probably end up roundshouldered from sitting hunched over a keyboard checking input data onscreen to the original customer instruction before releasing it into the Big Wide World.
Boring!

Actually, I wouldn't mind having the "Ultimate Computer" - just so long as Microsoft stays very far away from it.

Yeah, at least if it's XP there's a backdoor you can log into and controlt he computer remotely (as long as it's connected to the internet that is.. Who here thinks that 1,000,000,000,000 IP will do at that point?)

I've seen it before, but it's a good episode... Now when you're at it, why wouldn't you drop by into the nearest bookstore and spend your hard-earned pocket-money in Immortal Coil? The Ultimate Computer is one of the TOS artificial intelligence episodes getting an epilogue in the book --an excellent Trek novel in any case. *amazed with herself for actually coming up with something to post at TOS forum!*

Definitely an episode that withstands the test of time.
As a child, I was quite taken by the idea of a computer that thinks like a man. Especially one that believed in God!
Perhaps either a partnership between man and machine ala Elijah Bailey and R. Daneel Olivaw or a fusion like Dave Bowman and Hal experienced in "2010" is the next "logical" step.
