personally, I've read TONS of stories about the production, and just would be happy for a more conclusive telling that would solve some disputes of information I've read.

Well, Spock's "Remember" was an afterthought. Nimoy had so much fun filming this version (with no Roddenberry in sight) that he was very sad when the death scene came, they quickly added "Remember" figuring they could find someway out of it if need be. Also, the hand that you see in the closeup is NOT Nimoy. They did the scene so fast that later Meyer wanted a closeup, but instead of bothering Nimoy to come in for a hand shot, they just grabbed the nearest janitor who had similar hands. This make Nimory FURIOUS since he worked so hard developing half of Vulcan canon that when he sees this sloppy hand plopped on DeKelly's face, it's obviously NOT correct. When they approached Nimoy, they were so worried that he'd say no, they offered him the death scene from the start. In reality, it made no difference to him. He was OPEN to doing the film if the part was good (especially since Rodenberry was not involved and his lawsuits with Paramount had been settled) For the sequal, (III) Alley asked for more money than the supporting cast (Doohan, Takai, Nichols, and Koenig) had accepting (which is why they dumped her.) Harve Bennett was a sucessful TV producer (Mod Squad, Six Million Dollar Man, Bionic Woman) with an iron fist and history of saving money. They gave him 14mil and the project. He had NEVER seen any trek and ordered a viewing of all 80 episodes. Of all of these, he felt that Space Seed was the best candidate for a sequal. (basically, it was his briliance that realised connecting the series to the movie would be a good thing ) I've forgotten how they got Nick Meyer involved.
