One of my all-time favourite scenes: I was just wondering... Has anyone ever heard an explanation for why, of all the TOS characters, it was Bones visiting? Or, why was any of them visiting, I was under the impression that, at the beginning of TNG, the TOS crew was more or less against creating the spinoff. Nevertheless, it's a great scene.

I was going to say that either ST:IV or ST:V were being made at the same time, explaining the presence of DeForest. But they weren't...
I suppose that it was just to send the new crew on their way...
And yes, it's a nice scene

It was a good touch, despite all the makeup on De.
And superb lines.
But was that accent even more southern confederate than it had ever been before, "boy"?

Nimoy and Shatner were likely too busy and McCoy comes next on the list (Deforest basically retired in 1972)
After Trek was cancelled he starred in 1 movie (Night of the Lepus (1972)) After that, he did nothing but Leonard McCoy.

I never thought about it before, but I guess every trek pilot has characters from the one previous series.
McCoy in TNG's "Encounter at Farpoint," Picard in DS9's "The Emissary," and Quark in VOY's "The Caretaker."
Enterprise broke with tradition, unless you count Zephram's speech.

Well, going backwards in time didn't help them, so ZC was the only 'earlier' Trek character available with any degree of rationality.
At least the quote got its grammar corrected!!

I would have responded sooner, but I wanted to give other people a chance to get the initial speculations out of the way.
The same week that EAFP premiered, De Kelley attended a convention in New York. He said that Gene Roddenberry personally asked him to appear as Admiral McCoy so that the original fans would give the new show a chance.
The episode "Too Short A Season" was originally suppose to be a TOS/TNG crossover story as well but Shatner refused to do it so they changed the name of the Admiral to Jamison.
