I'll admit to being a little apprehensive about this third episode, given the blurb in the Radio Times. Thoughts of the third story in two other series came to mind....
But it came of fairly well. Certainly a different spin on a familiar theme. Nice effects too. And the look on Phlox's face when he thought the worst was going to happen. Just needed the lower lip to start quivering, really.
And Porthos got to go walkies! Hope he didn't mess the local ecosystem! (I think that's going to be my pet topic for the whole series, somehow!)

Could you establish a link on this thread, my dear? You've got me curious and that's usually dangerous. It could be anatomically impossible for him to do so. Having aliens display physical gestures that resemble humans can limit a story IMO. Remember Spock's raised eyebrow? I do with sentimental fondness.Look at it this way, he could be indirectly responsible for creating new life forms by doing that. Not a glamourous thought, but do we really know all of the contents of our primordial soup?

^^ Bit difficult to do a link to the printed page, Elric.
Basically it said something like the crew get high on a new planet. Suggesting the infamous 'intoxication' stories.

^^Major misunderstanding on my part, my dear. Sorry about that.
As for a better interpretation of the Radio Times statement, think "This Side of Paradise" meets "The Naked Time"(or "The Naked Now).

Except T'Pol didn't get to laugh and hang upside down from a bough!
It is a very good episode. I enjoyed it and would recommended if asked.

Except T'Pol didn't get to laugh and hang upside down from a bough or get "back to nature" with Tucker, much to the regret of some of the ladyfolk in fandom, I'm sure. I liked it too. It gave them both some range and the audience a chance to see how inventive a storyteller Archer can be in a crisis. Something that Kirk didn't do enough and Picard probably did a little too much. Wait until you see the later episodes. I look forward to your observations on those.

Heh heh heh...I'm going to enjoy dredging up old threads as I see some of these early episodes for the first time. ;D
I really liked this one. The Tucker-T'Pol conflict stands out in my mind as being both well acted and well executed. I also enjoyed seeing this show's first transporter accident. (Well, actually I didn't enjoy it at all...it made me want to toss my lunch. But you know what I mean.) Dr. Phlox continues to be my favorite character, and Billingsly continues to impress me with his subtle yet incredibly profound acting style. Oh, and let's not forget the debut of the Vulcan nerve pinch...was I reading too much into things by assuming that T'Pol was trying to keep it a secret?
So...Captain Archer is a water polo player? Interesting... Let's see...Picard was a horseman, Sisko liked to play baseball, Kirk was a girl-chaser (that's a sport, isn't it?)...so what was Janeway's sport? Did the woman even have a hobby to speak of other than coffee?

so what was Janeway's sport? Did the woman even have a hobby to speak of other than coffee? Tennis? Velocity? Both were mentioned.

Okay...velocity I remember...but tennis? Where did that little piece of trivia fall out?

Ack... *Tries to remember*...
It's in one of the two parters, I think. Janeway is in her ready room, with a futuristic racket and ball, talking to Tuvok about how she used to play tennis...
It could quite possibly be Year of Hell...

Believe it was either Basics or Future's End (I saw it recently) And it wasn't too much of a hobby, she practically killed Tuvok (She had trouble even HITTING the ball)

Believe it was either Basics or Future's End (I saw it recently) Yes, I knew that it was one of the double episodes... I saw it recently too... I would think that Future's End is the one, then... Well, she said that she played it back in her academy days... Note that Voyager mucked up its continuity here. The DS9 episode Distant Voices clearly shows tennis balls as normal tennis balls, and the rackets the same. Voyager went and made the sport look silly, however...
