I think I have to say that Rogue Planet may have been my least favorite episode... but that's not to say it wasn't any good. I did enjoy the episode but it dragged horribly. It seems that I knew what was going on half way through the second act, but it took Archer the whole episode! The roles were stereotypical.. bad hunters... good Enterprise crew. Frankly, I found that in previous Treks, I could guess the ending because it was the OPPOSITE of what it seemed to be. In this case, I would rather have seen that what was shown as evil hunters actually turned out to be the good guys. But, Rogue Planet is NOT filled with intrique. Instead it's filled with the same old story, shown in a unique way. We've got a planet with no sun (the planet shown is a scientific impossibility, but let's ignore that for now) so they are in perpetual darkness. It's a fun place to look at, but the story is so weak that we spend most of the time waiting for the crew to catch up with us. It ranks in there with episodes like Memorial, The Fight, and The Most Toys. Enjoyable to view, but ultimatly, forgettable additions to the world of Trek. (Note, the above epsisodes were pulled out of my... ear, let's not argue here, you get the point ) Final rating.. 6/10... maybe 5 depending on the series itself. Ratings tend to be comparative a bit, and with the POTENTIAL I see in this show, Rogue Planet will be one of the more, "That was the one where... oh man, what WAS that one about?" episodes. But, it's definatly better than the, "Did you ever see xxx? My god, that was horrible!" episode. So, if you're a fan (which you must be if you're reading this) see it. It's part of the trek cannon. But, if you were to miss 1 episode of the first 18.. miss this one because you won't.

Although I found some interesting details in this episode, there were enough inconsistancies that I agree with UT. 5/10.
Reed seemed surprised that the aliens' goggles could pick up infrared. "Gee," Zeph said after that line, "when I was in the Air Force 20 years ago we had the ability to see infrared." It's doubtful that that technology was lost in the 180-year gap. Plus, Zeph read this morning that the plant life on the planet was impossible. I know TPTB wrote in thermal vents on the planet that provided oxygen and water and heat for plant life to exist... but these plants had big leaves. Why do plants have big leaves? To collect the sun's energy for photosynthesis. If this planet is drifting through the dark void of space, and has been for centuries, why would the plants have leaves?
However, the promo for next weeks Ferengi-introducing episode... made me ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's about time they had a purely funny episode, and if the rest of this one's as good as the promo, we may have a new "Trouble with Tribbles"-caliber episode!

(Had to post again to get the darker gray background)
My Best/Worst for Rogue Planet
(Highlight below, possible spoilers...)
Best Line: "Actually, Captain, I already have that one." -- Reed Best Character Development: Mayweather Got Lines!!! Best Visual Effect: The Wraith morphing from a pig to a gnarled tree trunk Best Unexpected Plot Twist: Once again, there really wasn't one. When Archer decided to give the Wraiths the ability to mask their "fear chemical" (wouldn't that be pheromone?) I thought: hmmmm... level the playing field. How Kirk-ian. Best Tie to Former Version of Star Trek: Hoshi describing the Bore Worms: "Apparently they crawl into your ear to lay their eggs." ST II - TWOK. Worst Part: T'pol's line that Archer wouldn't be as motivated to help if the alien appeared as a scantily clad man. Nice PC statement, but completely a waste of a line; there was no reaction from Archer at all!
End spoilers.

Yeah, Mayweather had like a dozen lines. They must have freed up some money (don't actors get paid based on amount of dialogue?) or cured his laryngitis or something. ;D

Wow.. I really can't remember him even appearing in the episode... Is that a BAD sign for his "character"

^^Only if they have other navigators on stand-by. Sulu habitually saying "Course plotted and laid in, sir" didn't put him in danger. Then again, Chekov occasionally said that too...hmmmmm.

Okay, I'm going to be the odd man out (rather, the odd "woman" out) here.
I know...I know...there were really troubling things about this episode that bothered me. The science (no sunlight = no green plants) and the bit about the surprise about "infrared"...please!
But I did like the character development. I enjoyed the "Eagle Scout" interchange between Archer and Reed. I appreciated the continuing relationship between Trip and Archer. The poetry sequence was nice -- gave us some insight into the Captain...which until now have been pretty sparse.
Okay, not a great episode, true. But certainly not so terrible it deserves all the hugely negative bashing it's getting on other sites.
At least on this site, those of you who've posted seem pretty...um...tolerant. That's a good thing. Can't stand the ranters! (Okay, I'm an optimist, and I said my piece.)

Camino, You bring up some very valid points, what I saw was the bad but you found the good. Glad to have you on board.

You are more than welcome, Zeph. I try to keep an open mind. I love all the forms "Trek" takes. As it evolves, it's fun to see how we fans transform alongside. Glad to be here.

I can't be bothered to start a UK version, cos most of it has been said. Not the worlds greatest TV. As soon as Yeats got a mention, yawn.
How do the Americans feel about the implication that hunting for food is primitive and C22 has moved on from there. Thank goodness Malcolm didn't actually say 'Tally Ho!'
Were there echoes of the Kazon and Hirogen in the hunters with their trophy quest? As for the 'Amazon-like' forest and the shapeshifting prey, give me strength! I go with Blakes 7 (Harvest of Kairos if you want the precise reference) - anything that evolves in total darkness will probably look like a rock and be telepathic.
