Stirok and Johanssen waited behind the doors in sickbay. When Travvers and Captain Jefferys entered, they were ready for them. Stirok grabbed Travvers neck, causing the man to slump to the floor. Johanssen dragged Travvers to a stasis chamber and locked the hatch.
“Well, I take it you two lost your delusions of grandeur, eh?” said Jefferys.
Johanssen smiled. “I enjoyed the promotion while it lasted, but Mr. Stirok and I have taken a ‘voluntary rank reduction.’”
“Good work, lads,” said Jefferys. “Any idea how we can get out of this?”
“I believe I do, sir,” said Stirok. Stirok brought up a monitor showing patterns of energy. “As you have no doubt concluded, there are non-corporeal telepathic aliens living within that nebula.”
“So what do we do?” asked Jefferys. “Ask them to kindly stop messing with the minds of my entire crew?”
“Exactly,” said Johanssen evenly. “Sir, there’s no reason to believe that these aliens are hostile. They’ve made no attempts to damage or take control of the ship. So far, they’ve done nothing but make use all captains.”
Stirok continued. “Sir, we believe that Dr. Johanssen and I might be able to communicate with them. As you know, the doctor and I are both telepaths. But so far neither one of us has been able to reach them. But using our combined telepathic abilities, we may have a chance. However, we need to get closer…a lot closer.”
“How much closer are we talking?” asked Jefferys.
Johanssen sighed. “We’d need to get right into the heart of them.”
Jefferys shook his head. “There’s no way to get control of the bridge. Thram and his goons have that pretty much sealed off. Unless…”
“A shuttle craft,” Stirok said. “But we would need to get to a shuttlebay.”
“Aye, that won’t be easy,” said Jefferys. “Thram has the corridors crawling with guards and that trigger-happy agent, D’Aaron, is onboard. But we don’t have much choice. Let’s go!”

"You know, if this doesn't work, I think I have another idea...", Johansson spoke as Stirok, Jefferys and Johansson were getting themselves to the shuttlebay.
"Oh yeah? What's that, Doc?", responded Jefferys.
"Well, we all know how much the crew likes using the holodecks right?"
Jefferys nodded. "Yes, that is why I haven't been able to use one since we departed..."
"Well, If we could just claim to the guards that we are heading to the holodeck for some rest and relaxation, then we can program the holodeck to look like the bridge and patch the controls to the holodeck, which I believe Stirok can do from here once we have the hologram correctly set up..."
Stirok raised an eyebrow at Johansson's idea. "Yes, that I can do.. But it will take time. If we were to do this, we will have to go as fast as we can, as D'Aaron will track us. We will be able to hit them before they know it."
"Well Captain, I and do mean you Gavin, what do you think?", Johansson responded and waited for the answer.

Gavin thought about it.
"There is a third option, now that you mention the holodeck. Computer, initiate the Emergency Medical Hologram."
"Please state the Nature of the Medical Emergency."
"We've got a problem, photon man." Gavin responded. "We can adjust the program to look like Commander Tram, walk him into Engineering, and try to take over from there as well. Or use his as a distraction of some sort."
"Excuse me," the Mark 4 said, "I'm a doctor, not a decoy. I'm to be used only in cases of Medical Emergencies."
"I should be able to adjust to look of the program quite easily," said Johanssen.
"Good," Gavin replied. "You adjust his looks and send him to Engineering with Stirok, then work on the recreation in the holodeck. I'll get a shuttle out there and beam you two aboard if need be. Three plans has got to be better than 1."
"However," Stirok brought up. "With the three of us split up, we risk a greater chance of capture."
"Yes, Captain, that's true. More for you. They'll just lock you into a tractor beam and beam you back."
"Aye, maybe. But I wasn't the Head Engineer of Starfleet Headquarters because I could fix a toaster. Don't worry about me. Now, we can't use the communicators, since they appear to boost the signal from the Nebula so if you get in trouble, inject yourselves with a solution of Galamine."
"Sir, that will only give us a slight fever," Johanssen brought up.
"Yes, I'll monitor your bio-signs. If I see either of yours' go up, I'll beam you both aboard the shuttle. Now let's get to work."

As Rhai and Zack approached the bridge they heard the voice of Tram commanding his crew. Zack started to walk in, but Rhai put her arm out to hold him back.
"I dont think this is a good idea. Something is not right in there!" She said almost in a panic herself.
"As Captains we must take control over this ship. Are you going to help me or not woman?" He seemed a little more aggitated then he had been previously. Rhai sunk back.
"Maybe we should get our phasers out then and ready. Oh, I really dont think we should be here.." She looked to Zack hoping he would change his mind.
"I'm going in there. Somone has to stop this madness. If you aren't coming with... that's FINE, just say so. I would like to have back up though and unless you think Gavin is fit to help us out..." He looked back in the direction that they had come from.
"Ok.. let's go." She said and took a deep breath. They then entered the bridge. It was so chaotic! Thram stood in the middle of the bridge and it seemed as though the Andorian thought he owned the ship. Rhai whispered a plan tp Zack, who then snuck back in the door opening.
"Hey Thram!" Rhai shouted to get his attention above the crowded bridge of angery crewmembers and captains. "I think I just saw Captain Jefferies heading towards ... uh... engineering. You might want to see what he is up to." No sooner did the words come out of her mouth- Thram and his twitchy antennea headed off for engineering.
"Thram to engineering", there was no response from his communicator. "Thram to ENGINEERING!" He shouted.

Dayne turned around, phaser in hand, toward Zack and Rhai.
“Don’t even think about it,” she growled as she stepped around to the captains chair. “You people need a strong leader, one who will kick a*s*s* now and take names later, one whom the Romulans will fear. You namby pamby Starfleet officers with your arrogance and senseless regulations make me sick. Now step aside!” she barked as she waved the phaser in Zack’s direction.
Zack backed up cautiously as Rhai stood behind and to the left of him, looking on. Dayne sat down in the captains chair and sank back into the smooth Corinthian leather. She scanned her purview, and suddenly her brow furrowed.
Strange…she felt strange being so exposed with everyone looking at her. Funny, she had never wanted to be a Starfleet cap… A pain shot across her temples and momentarily blinded her as she doubled over in the chair. She dropped her phaser and fell to the floor.
Zack took quick advantage of the opportunity and kicked Dayne out of the way as he tried to grab her phaser. But Dayne had fought through pain before, and took ahold of Zack’s leg, tripping him up. She leapt toward Zack, but Zack stuck out his legs and pushed Dayne off. Dayne went flying toward the pilot’s console and landed with a thud. She jumped down and turned quickly, bringing her leg up and knocking Zack in the head. He fell to the ground and was about to reach for the phaser when Dayne stepped on his arm. He then grabbed her leg, causing her to fall. Then he lunged toward her and they began choking each other.
“Captains,” shouted Capt. Golko. “The shuttle bay doors are opening!”
Zack and Dayne stopped choking each other and turned toward Golko. Then they turned to each other.
“Come on,” growled Zack. “You have the conn, Rhai,” he said. Then Dayne and Zack left the bridge.

Stirok and the holographic doctor, masquerading as Thram, made it to engineering. A few security officers began to question Stirok, but after they saw what they thought was Thram, they quickly backed down.
“What are we doing here?” asked the hologram.
“I am attempting to disable the ship’s tractor beam,” replied Stirok while tapping the engineering controls. “If all goes well, we’ll be able to make our escape without incident.”
The hologram looked around nervously, uncharacteristically for Thram.
“Doctor, might I suggest that you relax,” said Stirok. “Your apprehension is putting our mission in danger.”
“Sorry,” said the EMH.
**************************** D’Aaron and Zack rode the turbolift to the opposite end of the ship toward the shuttlebay.
[Rhai to Zack]
“Go ahead.”
“Zack, someone is in main engineering trying to disable our tractor beam.”
“Acknowledge,” he replied. Zack turned to Dayne. “You take care of engineering, I’ll take care of the shuttlebay.”
Dayne drew her phaser. “My pleasure,” she said, smiling. “Computer, reroute turbolift to engineering.”
*****************************
Stirok managed to deactivate the tractor beam as Dayne strolled gracefully into engineering. “Stirok, I should have guessed it was you,” Dayne said seductively.
“It’s been a long time, Ms. D’Aaron,” replied Stirok.
D’Aaron walked with catlike grace to where Stirok and the holo-Thram stood. “We used to work so well together.” She ran her hand across Stirok’s face. “It’s a shame that I’ll have to kill you.”
D’Aaron looked from Stirok to Thram. Thram smiled weakly, obviously intimidated. D’Aaron lifted her phaser and fired at engineering holoemitter. The holoemitter blew into a shower of sparks as the hologram wavered then faded.
D’Aaron laughed out loud. “You didn’t really think that was going to fool me, did you?” She turned her phaser back toward Stirok's head and frowned. "Goodbye, old friend. I'm going to miss you."

"Excuse me," a voice interrupted. Dayne turned around and saw the huge form of Thram, the real Thram who'd stopped in Sickbay before arriving.
"Another?" Dayne said, assuming it was the hologram again. She was looking around for the emitter when Thram injected her with a sedative.
Stirok spoke before Thram had the chance to do anything. "The tractor beam was just taken offline. She was attempting to kill me before I could make repair." Even though Stirok hadn't planned on repairing it for many hours, it was truthful that she was trying to kill him before that time.
Thram walked over to the console and attempted to make sense of it. "Well? How do we fix it?" He was starting to become irrational, letting his guard down.
"First we must reroute power...," Stirok didn't need to finish his sentence Thram was unconscious with one little pinch on the neck. He then bit down on a small piece of plastic in his mouth which held the Galamine.
On board the DeForrest, Gavin was ready to beam his friends aboard. Suddenly, he noticed Stirok's temperature increase.
"That's my cue." He had a lock on them the whole time and beamed the Johanssen and Stirok on board. "Welcome aboard. Let's go."
On the bridge, Golko and Rhai were alone.
"The tractor beam is still inactive and the Doctor and Stirok have been beamed aboard. Should I open fire?"
"Why would we do that? What does it matter to us? They just caused us trouble anyway. Good riddance. However. WE now have control of the bridge. The testosterone filled males are gone. I suggest we keep it that way."
Golko smiled as she walked over the turbolift. Using her phaser she sealed the doors closed.

Johansson sat in the rear of the shuttle while Captain Jefferys was piloting the shuttlecraft.
"I've managed to recreate the bridge in perfect condition, Captain.", he spoke.
"Holo-Thram did not fare well, Captain. D'Aaron found us and blew Holo-Thram to individual photons.", Stirok spoke.
"Well, I never really had use for him anyways, Stirok. I always like to do things with my own hands. I don't believe in using EMH's. I also have a theory that the photons they emit can cause illnesses...
Jefferys interrupted Johansson "That's all fine, lads. We're in here now and nothing will stop us. We're almost there. Although the bridge crew don't seem to be trying to apprehend us..."
"That is because they think we are of no use, Captain," Stirok spoke, "They are not anticipating our plan. Those distractions did serve well even though they never went very far."
The doctor was never good at making physical plans of action. He was left better to making plans of medical practices. "Well, at least something worked", he chuckled.
"Alright, we've arrived," Jefferys spoke,"I think it is time for us to do our magic...."
"Captain, you might want to use this on us if we start behaving erracticly," Johansson spoke as he handed some sedative to Jefferys. He then looked over to Stirok and smiled. "That is, if you know what erratic means in beings who are telepathic."
"Of course I do, do you think I'm stu-" Both Johansson and Stirok had started concentrating on the nebula and they were speaking jibberish in unison. It was unlike anything Jefferys ever saw. He was in awe. He somehow knew this was normal. They were both in a tuning phase.
"Who are you? What do you want?", Both of them spoke. Jefferys was stunned. He was shaking. He did his best to reply.
"I am Captain Gavin Jefferys of the Starship Archer of the United Federation of Planets..."
"We've been monitoring you, Captain. That is, your ship, your crew. You behave unefficiently."
"Who are you to judge us without asking, you bloody thing."
"Silence! I will explain. We have made everyone on your ship Captains as a test of efficiency. It is apparent that you are not. Therefore we will return your crew back to normal." "Wait! Why this? Why did you choose us?"
"We chose you as part of an experiment for our own people. We intend to distract everyone like this in the Alpha Centauri system as a means to gain back what we had lost. You must understand captain, space debris are lethal to our kind, and we cannot let the beings of Alpha Centauri continue with their waste disposal that a Dayna D'Aaron has begun doing. It has been killing us. You must understand, Captain."
A look of shock struck Jefferys' face. "I... I understand.... Please, return our crew back to normal."
"Very well, Captain. And goodbye." And with that Johansson and Stirok broke out of concentration ready to fall unconcious.

Captain Golko sat in the command chair, with Captain Rhai standing beside her, with a fierce look in her eye.
"Yes, Captain Golko, the men are gone, but there is still a little issue that needs to be cleared up," Rhai said.
"What would that be?" Golko said, a little confused, and not quite sure why anything else needed to be cleared up. They had taken over the ship, and now the ship could function like it was meant to. Without the interference of the men. They always seemed to mess things up anyway.
Rhai smiled unpleasantly. "Why, which one of us is actually the captain of this ship," she said matter-of-factly.
Golko realized her mistake. She should have made sure that someone else had remained on the bridge with her. Thram, perhaps. No, then she wouldn't be in the position that she was in now. She would never have been able to get control of the ship away from him. D'Aaron, then.
Rhai reached behind her back, and withdrew a phaser that she had hidden there. Golko was out of reach of her own phaser.
Rhai smiled even more evilly. "Looks like your luck has just run out, Captain."
Golko noticed that Rhai's phaser was set to kill. So this was it then. Just as Rhai was about to pull the trigger, she became disorientated, and found it difficult to stay on her feet. Golko recognized the opportunity and got up to wrestle control of the phaser away from Rhai.
Or, she tried to stand up. As soon as she was on her feet, she, too, became disorientated and fell to the deck.
After a few minutes, the disorientation faded away. Golko looked up, still trying to fight naseua. What was she doing? She wasn't a captain. And neither was Rhai.
She could see that Rhai was beginning to realize the same thing.
"Bridge to Captain Jefferys," Golko said after tapping her comm badge. But there was no response.
Golko became alarmed. "Computer, where is Captain Jefferys?"
[Captain Jefferys is no longer on board.]
Golko looked at Rhai, who was also alarmed.
"Bridge to Commander Thram."
But there was no response from him either.
"Since communications are apparently cut off, it's up to us to try to re-establish some stability to the ship," Rhai said. "We better start with fixing the turbo lift doors."

Ensign Alia Kenek was disoriented, as she looked around the brig.
"Alia?" Will Brandt asked from the cell across from her.
"Lieutenent? Is that you?" She focused her eyes and noticed where she was. "Oh dear," she whispered. She'd barely spent any time on the Archer, and she'd managed to land herself in the brig. She could hear her mother's disapproving voice now...
Brandt was equally confused for a moment, but the memory of attempting to commandeer the ship with Alia started to trickle back into memory. "Oh, Alia, what did we do?"
Kenek was beginning to remember herself. She leaned against the wall and sighed heavily. "Something very, very stupid." She touched her collar and felt the rank pips of captain. Her cheeks colored as she pulled off three pips as quickly as she could. Not that it really mattered. The damage was done.
"I'm going to get a court-martial," she said in a panicked tone. "I'm going to get sent to a stockade..."
"Calm down, Alia," Brandt said in his most comforting voice. "There has to be an explanation for this." He looked at Ensign Cartwright, the security officer who was posted to look after the prisoners. He had a similarly confused look on his face as he pulled off his captain's rank pips as well. Kenek noticed this.
"What is going on?" Kenek asked.

Zack felt disoriented, nauseated and confused.
Where was he? What had happened?
He was used to being in control. He had years of experience in Vulcan mind control methods, and had fought his whole life to bury his pain and emotions. So why did he now feel as if he had lost control for the past few days?
He could not recall what had happened. He remembered considering leaving the Archer, but then everything went blank. He vividly remembered being the Captain of the Archer and confining Captain Jefferys to his quarters. He was where he had always wanted to be, captaining a Federation starship - proving to those who thought he would never amount to anything in his life, that he was a capable officer, in spite of his mixed heritage.
Now he knew he wasn't a captain. But he was a Commander - - the XO of the Archer. He had to set a good example for the others and make sure everything was running smoothly. How could he let himself lose control like that?
Deep down he was also hoping that Counselor Rhai was okay. While he could hide his feelings from those around him, he certainly could not hide them from himself. He didn't know what he felt for her, but he definitley felt something. He had to make sure she had not been injured during the past few days.
Zack decided to figure out what had happened and worked away at a nearby console:
"Computer, please locate Captain Jefferys"
Zack waited for the computer to respond: "Captain Jefferys is curently not onboard the Archer".
What? Where can the Captain be? I remember something about the captain trying to board a shuttlecraft, but where exactly was he going? Why did he leave the ship?
Zack knew the only way he would find out what was going on was to make his way to the Bridge. Maybe then he could figure out what had happened.
As Zack made his way to the Bridge he discovered that many other officers believed at one stage, that they too were in charge of the Archer - and they, too, wore 4 pips on their collars. A general atmosphere of disorietenation enveloped the ship.
"It's time to get to the bottom of this", Zack said to himself as he made his way to the Bridge.

The shuttlecraft DeForrest set down lightly on the shuttlebay’s deck. From the window, Jefferys, Johansson and Stirok saw Dayne D’Aaron standing alone. Jefferys powered down the engines and opened the hatch.
“Well, has everyone lost their delusions of captainhood?” asked Jefferys.
“Yes..yes, sir,” said D’Aaron looking down. “And none too soon. I hear there was quite a battle on the bridge.”
Jefferys smirked. “Well, they say when you start with a new crew, there are bound to be personality conflicts. I just hope everyone’s got it out of his or her system. Stirok, you better get things under control in engineering. Meanwhile, I’ll be on the bridge, trying to get everyone calmed down. Doctor, just in case, you’re with me.”
Jefferys and Johansson left of the bridge while Stirok went the other way, down the corridor toward engineering. D’Aaron paused thoughtfully for a moment then jogged to catch Stirok.
“Stirok, I just wanted to apologize,” said D’Aaron.
“Indeed,” replied Stirok, still walking down the corridor.
“Yes,” continued D’Aaron, embarrassed. “You know, for trying to kill you and all.”
Stirok furrowed his brow. “Clearly, the aliens were affecting your behavior. I see no reason to apologize.”
“I know…it’s just that it’s good to see you again and, well, we worked so well together before,” D’Aaron sighed. “I just didn’t want what happened to ruin our relationship.”
Stirok stopped and faced her. “You proceed from a false assumption, Agent D’Aaron. My feeling were not hurt, because I have no feelings. I am willing to overlook your behavior because you were not responsible.”
D’Aaron supposed that in his own way, Stirok did forgive her. “Well, okay then. I happen to know a thing or two about tractor beams. Maybe I can help you get them working again.”
“Your help would be appreciated,” said Stirok. D’Aaron almost thought she saw Stirok smile as she took his arm and they continued toward engineering. But no, that would be “illogical.”

As Dayna walked with Stirok, her comm badge chimed.
"D'Aaron."
[Jefferys. Dayna, can you come to my ready room?]
"Yessir," she replied. She turned to Stirok. "I'll be down as soon as I'm done with the captain," she said, touching his arm. Stirok nodded in a nonchalant manner and continued on.
*********************************
Dayna stood before Jefferys in his ready room. His expressionless face masked deep concern, but Dayna could tell something was troubling him.
"Dayna, we spoke with the aliens who live in the nebula. Apparently the signals that Alpha Centauri sends out is killing them. They are requesting that you stop sending them," said Gavin.
Dayna had to stop herself from laughing out loud. "Stop? Are you serious?" she asked incredulously.
"Yes," said Gavin softly.
"Stop?" protested Dayna, her voice rising. "Do you know how long it took us to build that communication center at Alpha Centauri, to coordinate all routing of subspace coded messages in this quadrant through Alpha Centauri? Do you appreciate the strategic significance of this base? DO YOU?"
Gavin's face suddenly turned red and he clenched his right fist. "Listen here," he said in a low controlled voice. "I'm sure those signals are very important to FI's overall strategic intelligence, but I cannot, WILL NOT, abide the death of innocents to accommodate FI's plans!"
"HA!" replied Dayna. "Who said you would have any say whatsoever in the matter?" retorted Dayna.
Gavin's chest heaved and his breathing became more rapid as his anger rose. He gazed at the defiant young woman before him and noticed she had the same eyes as her father. Gavin's stance softened and his breathing became less labored.
"I served with your father on board the USS Expedition. He was a good man, a fair man, and I looked up to him. Look to him now, Dayna. What would he do?"
Dayna shook with anger and slapped Gavin hard across the face. "How dare you? How DARE you invoke my father's name?" she screamed.
Gavin maintained his gaze and stood rock still. Dayna could feel a heat rising within her, but then felt herself withering under Gavin's stare. Her lip began to tremble, and tears welled in her eyes, spilling down across her cheeks. "How dare you?" she said softly as she turned away.
Dayna felt the grief again, and fought it. She defied it. She kept it at bay and nursed her anger like a newborn babe. She needed the anger. It pushed her, drove her, caused her to become one of FI's best agents, entrusted with the secrets of the Black Chamber.
"Lass," said Gavin.
Dayne turned to him and regarded him through a blurry haze.
"Let it go," he said softly.
Dayna sobbed out loud, once, and found she couldn't fight it any more. The sobs came rolling forth as she gulped each breath. Gavin stepped over to Dayna and held her as she cried in his arms.
She allowed herself the luxury of grief this time. Just this time. When she felt she had no more tears to cry, when her throat burned from crying, she broke from Gavin's arms. He handed her a tissue box and she laughed nervously. She had allowed herself to become vulnerable in front of someone, and that made her feel uncomfortable, yet in a good way. She dried her face and walked to the window.
"There's no way you're going to shut down Alpha Centauri," she said. "FI has powerful friends on the Federation Council." She turned to face Gavin. "Our director is a maestro of bureaucratic maneuvering. After he gets through with the council, he'll have them thinking those aliens are a threat to us and that we're doing the universe a favor by killing them off."
"We have to do something," replied Gavin.
"We need more information," said Dayna. "We need to know exactly what it is in our signals that's harming them. If we can filter it out..." she said hopefully.
"What are you waiting for? Get down to engineering with Stirok," said Gavin.

[Jefferys to Brandt.] A combadge sitting on a table in the brig sounded.
Ensign Cartwright looked curiously at the combadge and brought it over to the cell where Brandt was still being held. He turned off the force field and handed Brandt the commbadge, not really sure what to do.
"Yes, Captain?" Brandt replied.
[Will, I need you to get down to Engineering and help Stirok and D'Aaron.]
"Well, I would love to, Captain, but I'm currently in the brig."
[OH! No one has busted you out of there yet?] Jefferys sounded amused. [Well, you have my permission to leave, just get down to Engineering!]
Cartwright nodded to Brandt as he stepped out of the cell. He glanced over at Kenek, who gave him a desperate look. Brandt chuckled.
"Oh, and Captain?" He said.
[Yes, Will?]
"Is Ensign Kenek free to go as well?"
Kenek could hear the captain laughing lightly. [Aye, Lieutenent! Someone has to steer the ship!]
Cartwright removed the forcefield to Kenek's cell and returned her combadge. She stepped out gratefully; she couldn't remember ever feeling so claustrophobic.

Thram found himself being nudged awake, and his bindings being undone by Ensign Golko. And he found himself with a splitting headache. He couldn't believe what he had done. It was an embarrassment to both him and to the uniform that he wore.
Granted, he was Andorian, and all Andorians seemed to think of themselves as being superior to the weaker species, especially humans. But that was no excuse to take control of the Archer.
He was sure that there had been some good explanation for his actions, but the bottom line was that he had put the ship and its crew in jeopardy. And that was unacceptable. There was only one thing that he could do.
Thram headed for the bridge. Once there, he motioned Jefferys to the ready room.
"Something on your mind, Commander?" Jefferys asked as he sat down behind his desk.
"Captain, I...."Thram started.
"Don't tell me, this has something to do with your actions while we were all being controlled by the aliens, doesn't it."
Apparently Jefferys was having a lot of conversations like this lately.
"Yes, sir. I feel that due to my actions, its best if I leave the ship."
Jefferys was surprised. "Commander, we need you here."
"Sir, my actions were unacceptable."
"But understandable. I won't accept any paperwork that involves you leaving Archer, Commander."
Thram left the ready room knowing that he had found a new home. At long last.
